Bethel Presbyterian Church is ruled by a plurality of ordained elders. Eldership
rule is foundational to the Christian church. It was the customary practice of the
apostles to appoint elders in every newly organized church. Luke records this fact
in the book of Acts: “So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed
with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” (Acts
14:23) The goal of eldership rule is to build up and edify the body of Christ until
the time when the church reaches full maturity in Christ. Our elders serve the church
by ministering the word of God through preaching and teaching, administering the
sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s supper, and exercising church discipline.
In addition to elders the church is also served by deacons. The primary duty of
the deacons is to manage the property and finances of the church and serve those
in need. The office of deacon dates back to the early church. Luke records the first
election of deacons in Acts 6:1-7.
